AT A GLANCE
A sign’s ruler is the planet assigned to that sign in an astrological system. The traditional Western domicile scheme uses seven visible bodies. Modern astrology often adds Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. State which system you use; a ruler is a symbolic relationship, not ownership or a causal mechanism.

The traditional domicile scheme #
| Planet | Sign(s) |
|---|---|
| Sun | Leo |
| Moon | Cancer |
| Mercury | Gemini, Virgo |
| Venus | Taurus, Libra |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius |
Sun → Leo; Moon → Cancer; Mercury → Gemini and Virgo; Venus → Taurus and Libra; Mars → Aries and Scorpio; Jupiter → Sagittarius and Pisces; Saturn → Capricorn and Aquarius.
The scheme places the luminaries in neighboring signs and distributes the other planets in paired signs around them. Ptolemy explains this arrangement in Book I, chapter XX of the Tetrabiblos. The old phrase ‘houses of the planets’ in that context means domiciles, not the twelve numbered chart houses.
Modern additions and differences #
| Planet | Sign |
|---|---|
| Uranus | Aquarius |
| Neptune | Pisces |
| Pluto | Scorpio |
Modern astrologers commonly associate Uranus with Aquarius, Neptune with Pisces and Pluto with Scorpio. Some use these as replacements, others as additional rulers, and traditional practitioners retain Saturn, Jupiter and Mars respectively.
Our sign pages state the traditional ruler first and identify modern additions. Do not switch between systems unnoticed when tracing a chart. The outer planets were discovered long after the classical domicile structure developed.
How a ruler connects chart topics #
Suppose Gemini is rising. Mercury is the ruler of the rising sign and is often called the chart ruler. If Mercury is in the tenth house, an astrologer may connect questions of personal approach with public responsibility. Mercury’s own sign, aspects and condition qualify that reading.
A house cusp ruler works similarly: identify the sign on the cusp, then locate that sign’s ruler. In whole-sign houses there is one sign per house. In other systems, a house may contain more than one sign, but its cusp sign remains the usual starting point for this technique.
Rulership is not the whole judgment #
Domicile, exaltation and other traditional dignities are separate concepts. A planet in its own sign is described as having access to its resources within that framework; it does not guarantee good behavior or easy circumstances. Context still matters.
Do not assume that Mars rules every first house or Venus every seventh house. That confuses numbered houses with signs. Nor does a sign’s tarot correspondence create a direct numerology correspondence through its ruler. Each system needs its own documented relationship.
