AT A GLANCE

Astrology is a family of traditions that interprets celestial positions as symbols of human experience. A birth chart maps the sky for a particular time and place. Learning to read it means distinguishing planets, signs, houses and aspects before combining them into a tentative interpretation.

What a birth chart records #

A natal, or birth, chart is a diagram of astronomical positions viewed from Earth. The zodiac is the coordinate circle used to locate the Sun, Moon and planets. The horizon and meridian orient the chart to a location. Astronomy supplies positions; astrology supplies interpretive meanings. Accurate coordinates do not by themselves validate those meanings.

Our primary framework is Western tropical astrology, whose zodiac begins at the March equinox. This is different from a star-referenced sidereal zodiac. Traditions also disagree about house systems, rulers, aspects and techniques, so a chart’s settings should be recorded rather than treated as invisible defaults.

The four parts to learn first #

Planets, signs and houses answer different questions: which function, in what style, and in which life setting? Mercury concerns communication; Virgo gives a discriminating, practical style; the third house supplies everyday exchange as a setting. No one layer replaces the others.

Aspects describe angular relationships between chart factors. A conjunction places factors together, while a square or opposition gives a different relationship. Their interpretation depends on the planets and context rather than a simple list of lucky and unlucky angles.

A manageable starting sequence #

Begin with Sun, Moon and rising, then locate each personal planet’s sign and house. Choose one close major aspect to explore. Write one ordinary-language sentence about each factor and keep the wording tentative. Learn supporting concepts as they arise rather than memorizing every combination.

For example, instead of declaring ‘Venus in the seventh means marriage,’ ask how values and cooperation might matter in one-to-one agreements. The person’s real relationships should shape the discussion. If the interpretation does not fit, leave it open rather than inventing hidden reasons it must be true.

What responsible interpretation leaves open #

Astrological interpretations are not established causal explanations or guaranteed predictions. Broad descriptions can feel personal even when many people recognize themselves in them. Compare a reading with specific experience and allow disagreement. A chart should not diagnose health, assign moral character or replace evidence in important decisions.

You do not need to provide birth data to read this library. If you later use a chart service, accurate time and place matter most for the Ascendant and houses. An unknown birth time is a real limitation, not permission to quietly invent one.
